Second International Workshop for securing IoT systems using BigData

Introduction to workshop

We are pleased to unveil the second edition following the successful launch of the first edition.

In today's world, cyber intrusions are happening at an unprecedented speed, with both attackers and defenders utilizing advanced techniques in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The vulnerability of IoT systems is particularly noteworthy, and the sheer volume of data generated by these activities makes it challenging for the human workforce to monitor and detect intrusions effectively. Therefore, it is crucial to automate intrusion detection and monitoring in IoT to keep pace with the rapid advancements in technology. We propose hosting research presentations from both academia and industry focusing on the application of ML and AI in securing IoT systems.

Securing IoT is a specialized field within cybersecurity that requires expertise in IoT-specific operating systems and network capabilities. General cybersecurity professionals working in Security Operation Centers may not have the necessary knowledge and skills to identify IoT-related attacks. Therefore, it is essential to bring together experts in this area to share ideas and collaborate, thereby fostering a community of research and practice. Our aim is to create a platform where researchers and practitioners can come together to address the unique challenges associated with securing IoT.

Program co-chairs

Cristian Bucur

Cristian Bucur holds a master degree in information security from Lulea University of Technology

with a large expertise in the area of Cybersecurity in roles such as: Cybersecurity Expert, Security Architect, Enterprise Architect.

Cristian Bucur works currently in the Cybersecurity area in Montreal, Canada, and he is a PhD Candidate at Polytechnique de Montreal

in the area of Cybersecurity/Computer Science. He’s also a member of the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity expert list.

Cristian Balan

Professor Cristian Balan is a cybersecurity lecturer at SUNY Plattsburgh and the coordinator for the Center of Cybersecurity and Technology.

He has taught in both the SBE and Education departments in technology. Recent courses are MIS275, MIS418 Cybercrime, MIS440 Managing Information Systems,

MIS419 Information Assurance and Network Controls, and MIS420 Data Privacy.

Professor Balan graduated from SUNY at Plattsburgh in 1999 with a B.A. in Mathematics, in 2001 with an M.S. in Teaching Secondary Mathematics and in 2003 with a C.A.S. in School Leadership.

He has managed information systems for large organizations to include school districts, Department of Defense and state and local government departments.

Mr Balan’s research interests include remote digital forensics, intrusion detection and incident response.

 

Stéphane Gagnon

 

Professor Stéphane Gagnon is Associate Professor in Business Technology Management (BTM) at the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO), based in Gatineau, National Capital Region.

He obtained a Ph.D. in Business Administration, specialized in Technology Management and Strategy, from the Université du Québec à Montréal (1994-2001), a M.A. in Public Administration from Carleton University (1991-1994),

and a B. Soc. Sc. In Economics & International and Comparative Politics from University of Ottawa (1988-1991).

His research deals with digital transformation and big data analytics, applied to the healthcare, energy, and financial services industries, as well as public administration.
